Well, it's a brand new year! I put away all my Christmas decorations today and I'm ready to get back to my master bedroom redo. I've got lots to share with you, today I'm sharing my painted fabric headboard!

How to Paint Fabric

Here is what it looked like when I brought it home.

Oh yah!!!

#brothel!!!

I bought it from a friend who bought it from one of her friends. She sold it to me because it smelled pretty badly of smoke. I took a chance and bought it anyway hoping that I could get rid of the smell.

My gamble paid off and I was successful with removing the smell! See my method here: How to Remove Smoke Odors from Upholstery.

So, next came paint! I used Valspar paint in dark teal color called Firmament. I chose a flat finish but I don't know if that really matters. I mixed textile medium in with my paint to make it more suitable for fabric. I used this kind by Delta:

Step 1. Mix 1-part textile medium to 1-part paint (I ended up using about 1.5 quarts of paint for my headboard and it's a queen size).

Step 2. Spray the fabric with water just enough so it's damp to the touch, you don't want it soaking wet. Then start painting!

This is after one coat of paint. I smooshed the paint down into the tufting so there were actually little puddles of paint in there! Then I put a fan on it and let it dry for about 4 hours before I started my next coat.

Step 3. In between each coat of paint sand the headboard. Yes, I said sand it! I think this was especially helpful since my headboard is velvet. It really softened up the fabric.

And here it is on my bed!

Now I know you're wondering... is it still soft? The answer is no, not really. It's kind of stiff but it's not something that I'll be sitting on like a chair so I don't care!

I'm really happy with how it turned out, it's just as I pictured in my head!

You can see the nap of the velvet on it which I like. If you paint regular fabric that does not have a nap to it then it will be smooth looking and that's where the sheen of the paint may make a difference as well. I'm thinking if you paint smooth fabric then a satin or glossy paint will appear shinier.

So, from this...

 To this...

What do you think? Have you ever tried painting fabric? If not, do you think you might like to give it a go?

I've got lots more to share on my master bedroom redo so stay tuned!
