Changing Things Up - Cozy Minimalist Style

Hello friends! Have you heard of a blog called {Nesting Place}? I've been following Myquillyn, aka The Nester for years and I've always liked her decorating style.
She has written a book also called The Nesting Place: It Doesn't Have to Be Perfect to Be Beautiful and now she has an online course called {Cozy Minimalist}.
I watched a short little video she did about how to style a sofa you hate to become one you love... or at least one you can tolerate until you can afford a new one. You can see it {here}.
After watching the video I made the spur of the moment decision to sign up for the cozy minimalist course. I signed up for the self study course and so far I'm really having fun with it!
The idea is that instead of waiting for your dream house you learn to love the one you are in and embrace it's imperfections. Her motto is "It doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful".
You pick a room in your house that you would like to work on (I chose my living room) and the first week's assignment is to "quiet your space" which means remove everything except the large furniture pieces and the TV... yep EVERYTHING.
Then she walks you through how to put it back together the proper way... lighting, rugs, how to hang art work, etc.
At first I though nah... I can do it without taking everything out... but then I thought meh! why not?! It'll be fun... like a clean slate!
On Saturday I worked on quieting my space.
Almost everything except the large pieces were moved out... and now that blue duct tape covering the old fireplace pipe hole is glaring! I really need to fix that!
Here is my pile of "stuff" piled in the dining room. She says not to get rid of anything yet, just put it in another room. I'm already feeling like I could part with some of it though!
We are supposed to live with it like this for about a week. It's not that bad really! We are to try out some different furniture placements and find the best placement for it all.
There's my new (now old) foyer from {how to fake a foyer}... I know... you're thinking "but you JUST did that!"... I know, I know... but that's just how I roll! I'm kind of flighty when it comes to home decor!
I tried the couch in about 4 different places in the room... it's the IKEA Ektorp sectional and MAN is that thing hard to move by yourself! But it was much easier with all the little stuff out of the way!
This is where it's sitting now.
And this is now where the TV is sitting.
Right now it's still empty and I'm still living with it and letting the quiet room speak to me :)
Here are some before shots. I hope you'll come back and check out the after... coming soon!
We'll see what happens! Who knows... maybe it'll end up right back like it was here! lol!
Here are some books you might enjoy:

I can't wait to see!!!
ReplyDeleteCrazy woman!! LOL! It kinda sounds like fun but boy! What a lot of work!
ReplyDeleteI have that book and read every word from cover to cover! She has a beautiful and simple style and I love her outlook. You are one motivated lady! I don't know if I could do what you are doing...especially when your room looked awesome! But, I totally understand why you are doing it. I can't wait to see the outcome!
ReplyDeleteI love the looks on your pups faces, it's like they are saying where is the couch going now? ;) Well that's what I think my dog says when I pull those shenanigans on him! ;)
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard of that book or ecourse, I just went to your links to check it out. Looks like a great course!
I did love your before photos!! But can't wait to see your after!!
Have a Happy Wednesday!!
Kimberley

Great share on Nesting Place -- I hadn't heard of before but now I will certainly check her out! Very clever premise of emptying the room. Can't wait to see how it works out for you! And your dogs are so darn super cute.
ReplyDeleteThank you Becky!
