Vintage Lingerie Chest Makeover

I am still gathering display pieces in preparation for an overhaul of my small booth at the antique mall. Remember the Ice Cream Colored Bookcases? Those are all going to be used as display shelves in my space and today I have another piece to share with you!
I found this vintage lingerie chest at Value Village, it was $14.99 and U.G.L.Y. Here is what it looked like. You can see some of the plastic doors are missing, it's an ugly, dark maroon color, and there are stains inside on some of the shelves.
Since the covering was vinyl I thought why not paint it? I used the same custom color that I mixed up for the smallest ice cream colored bookshelf. It took about 2 coats and I think it turned out great!
Next I wanted to address the ugly, stained shelves. I just happened to have a roll of vintage wallpaper that matched the buttery yellow outside perfectly!
I made a pattern from newspaper so I could get the notched corners in the right spot and cut all 8 pieces and then used Modge-Podge to secure them to the shelves.
You can probably tell that this entire piece is made out of cardboard except for some skinny wood strips along the front of each shelf. I took advantage of those wood strips and stapled the wallpaper to each one from the inside of each shelf.
All that was left to add wallpaper to now was the back!
I cleaned the Plexiglas doors, painted the ugly gold knobs with robin's egg blue paint, and reattached them leaving the top spaces open instead of the bottom this time.
I think it turned out so cute! I'm planning to use this to display linens in my space.
I almost didn't put the little doors back on, I was worried that they might be more in the way when people are trying to look through the things on the shelves. But they are so cute, so we'll see... I may end up taking them back off.
Quite a difference don't you think?
I was planning the booth redo for this weekend but I came down with the flu and have been sick for almost a week now! I'm finally starting to feel a little better so I'm planning the redo for next Friday.

What a pretty makeover Tania! Love how you repurposed it! Or I should say "makeover." I have one very similar that has drawers, but it's also made of cardboard I've been using it & would like to do something to pretty it up.
ReplyDeleteWell maybe you can give painting it a shot!

ReplyDeleteIt turned out really cute! You do know that people are going to want to purchase it instead of the contents----right?? LOL!
ReplyDeleteGreat makeover! It was rather sad and dreary looking before, but now it's clean and cute.
ReplyDeleteWhat a difference after your makeover. It is adorable and will make a great display piece. Glad you are feeling better.
