How to Make Scrap Wood Pumpkins

06 October
I enjoy making things out of things that would usually be thrown away like tin cans, glass jars, cardboard, etc.

Today I'm showing how to make some cute wood-burned pumpkins from scraps of wood.

I used a wood-burning tool to add a fun quote to them.

I have had my wood-burning tool for a long time but until now, I had never used it!

Supplies Needed to Make Your Own

Your scraps of wood just need to be a size and shape that reminds you of a pumpkin! Sand the edges so there are no splinters.

Choose a quote and then lay out the letters so you know how many words you can get on each line.

Draw light pencil lines across the wood to make sure that your words stay straight.

Put your letter into the wood burner (they just screw in) and allow it to heat up. Be careful, it doesn't take long!

Once the wood burner is hot, begin burning the letters of your chosen quote. This part will take about 15 to 30 seconds per letter depending on how hot the letter is.

To check, lift up the edge a little bit to see if it's dark enough.

Use two hot pads to change out the letters, one on your hand to remove the hot letter, and one on your work surface to lay the hot letter on to cool.

Trust me on this, these are H.O.T.!! A paper towel won't cut it, these made burn marks on my hot pad!

Once you have the quote stamped into your wood piece you can paint it. I chose two different colors of orange, one pumpkin in each color!

Just paint right over the wood burning.

Be ready with a damp paper towel to blot the paint back off to show the letters.

The vines were made free-hand with the regular tip for the wood-burning tool. If you have never used a wood-burning tool before and you want to add some vines or other details, I would suggest practicing on a scrap (I practiced on the back of one of my pumpkins).

Drill a hole in the top of each pumpkin and add the stems and a few silk leaves.

Glue the two pumpkins together and you have a cute little pumpkin set!
