I love Justina Blankeney's boho style, she calls in "Jungalow"! I would fill my whole house with her stuff if I could!
But... alas... I cannot afford that!
So, what does a good DIYer do when she cannot afford the objects of her desire?!
Yes! That's right, she makes her own!😄
I have been coveting the Ayo Mirror that Anthropologie carries in their Justina line.
But it's $148.00! So, I decided to DIY my own copy cat version!
When I saw Justina's mirror it made me think of these rattan placemats that I had.
And that is what got the DIY wheels turning! I decided that I could DIY a sunburst mirror of my own with the placemat and a few simple supplies!
I thrifted my placemats and I see similar placemats at the thrift stores often. I've also seen very similar items at stores like Target lately since the boho style is pretty popular right now.
The mirror I'm using has beveled edges and was actually meant to put a candle on, but a regular mirror circle would work just as good.
To make the sunburst mirror first glue the mirror onto the rattan placemat making sure you get it centered evenly. Place it mirror side down on a table (this will ensure the glue doesn't seep down between the rattan and glue the whole thing to your table!), place some books on top of it while it dries. I used the E-6000 glue for this.
Next cut and shape your pieces of reed. To make the round pieces, wet the reed and shape it around small jars (or other round objects) in the size you need. I used clamps to hold it around the jar and let it dry overnight.
Next, glue the pieces onto the mirror. I figured out where I wanted them and then placed tape next to where they would go. That way, I could place them exactly where they needed to be and not have to try to move and reposition them when they have glue all over them!
You will need a glue that is suitable for multi-surfaces such as glass. And it needs to have a very fine point applicator so that you can avoid big glops of glue. I chose Aleene's Ultimate Glue.
Put a fine bead of glue along the length of the reed pieces, place on the mirror, and press down. This glue grabs really quickly so they were secure in no time! (Don't worry too much about glue smudges on the mirror at this point, we'll clean that up after everything has dried).
To make the long, twisted pieces that go around the edge of the mirror, cut two long pieces of reed (long enough to go around the mirror a couple of times), glue and clamp one end (I put the whole clamp under a stack of books to hold it secure), then gently twist the pieces the whole length to the other end, glue and clamp the other end, and let it dry.
Put a bean of E-6000 around the edge of the mirror and wrap this twisted piece around a couple of times. I did this with two separate lengths of the twisted reed.
My mom gave me these reed sticks for something, I can't remember what now! They didn't work for that project but they worked perfectly to make the sunburst effect! I think barbecue skewers would work too, or maybe even try wetting and straightening some pieces of the reed used above!
Anyway, I cut my reed sticks to be 3.5" each, you'll want to determine how long you want your sun rays to be. Tuck them under the rattan pieces on the mirror and put a little dab of glue on each one to hold it in place.
Once everything is dry, take a razor blade and clean up the smudges of glue that are left on the mirror.
And now you have a super cute, boho sunburst mirror for a fraction of the price of those you see online! Sorry Justina, maybe one day I'll be able to afford your super awesome Ayo mirror!! 😘
I have this hanging in my bedroom because I really like it against the black walls 😁
What do you think of my new hair color?!
Here are some other mirrors similar to Justina's Ayo mirror. The Emuna Mirror and the Ida Mirror.

Supplies Needed to Make Your Own
- Rattan Placemat (mine are thrifted but these are similar)
- Round Reed (mine was 3mm diameter but yours will depend on the size of your mirror)
- Reed Sticks (I had these but barbecue skewers would work too)
- Aleene's Ultimate Glue
- E-6000 Glue
- Small Round Mirror (choose a size that fits the placemat center nicely)
- Razor Blade, Scissors, and Small Clamps
