Upcycled Wooden Tray

It's Thrifty Chicks day!!! 😜
If you're new to LVC, the Thrifty Chicks is a group of blogging friends (myself included) and each month we get together (virtually mind you... we are all about social distancing!) and share an upcycling project. Each month we have a specific item that we all get creative with, this month we are upcycling trays!
I decided to paint the tray black. I used Yellow Tree paint in "Wicked".
I was able to cut it with my scroll saw. If you choose to cut Plexiglass with a scroll saw, make sure you push it through quickly because if you let the saw blade stay in one place too long it will get hot and burn or melt it.
I cut them to size, painted them black, and then used E-6000 to glue them in place.
I think it's such an improvement over what it looked like before!
Right now it's on my dresser.

The tray I'm using is something that I had in my laundry room but I've traded it out for a different one so now this one is getting a makeover!

I've seen some really pretty trays made with ceramic tiles and I love the look, but I don't have any tiles. I thought I could use paper instead and create a little patchwork look.
Supplies Needed to Make Your Own
- Tray
- Paint (I used Yellow Tree in Wicked)
- Scrapbook Papers (I used 4 different designs)
- Mod Podge
- Plexiglass
- Wooden Skewers
- E-6000 Glue
I chose four different scrapbook papers from my stash to create little paper tiles.
I decided to paint the tray black. I used Yellow Tree paint in "Wicked".
Then I started laying out my paper tiles to see how I wanted to arrange them and once I settled on a design, I used Mod-Podge to adhere the paper tiles to the bottom of the tray.
So once the paper was all in place and adhered to the tray, I needed to figure out how to protect the paper. Because as it was right then, any little drip of anything would ruin it.
I had a scrap of Plexiglass leftover from a different project that I thought would work. In these pictures, it has a protective film on both sides.
I was able to cut it with my scroll saw. If you choose to cut Plexiglass with a scroll saw, make sure you push it through quickly because if you let the saw blade stay in one place too long it will get hot and burn or melt it.
Next, I needed some way to keep the Plexiglass in place and protect the edges so water or other liquids can't seep in. Wooden skewers to the rescue!!
I cut them to size, painted them black, and then used E-6000 to glue them in place.
So, here is my finished tray!
I think it's such an improvement over what it looked like before!
Right now it's on my dresser.
