I created some DIY artwork for the laundry room I recently redecorated that I want to share today along with a good idea gone bad.
Sometimes during the DIY process, things just don't work out how you envision them in your head so I'm sharing real life today and my process for when things don't go exactly how I planned!
Laundry Room Art with Repurposed IKEA Mirrors
Looking for some inexpensive artwork for your laundry room? Read on for some great DIY options you can try!
Back when I shared my Laundry Room Design Board, I had some cute little Wash, Dry, Fold, Repeat Laundry Signs in my design plan with the intent to try to make something similar instead of buying them.

The laundry room is at my boyfriend's house and there are a bunch of these unfinished IKEA framed mirrors around the house, so I snagged four of them to use for this project. I see these at thrift stores and garage sales all the time so it shouldn't take too much effort to find some of these if you want to recreate this project.
Step 1: Stain the unfinished wood in the color of your choice.
Step 2: Choose some clipart, resize the images to the size you need, and print them out on scrapbook paper.
Step 3: Cut out the images to fit inside the frame and cover the mirror.
Step 4: Use Mod Podge to adhere the images to the mirror. Put a layer over the mirror and lay the image on top, smoothing it out (an old credit card works great for this).
This next project is the one that didn't go as planned but I'm going to show it anyway because in the end I think it turned out pretty cute!
I used the last wooden framed mirror and stained it just like the others.
I wanted to add words to this frame and was feeling lazy. I thought that I could use some alphabet stickers that I had, paint over them, and then remove them to create my sign.
I spelled out my saying on the stained wood.
I even rubbed them vigorously to make sure the edges were sealed down onto the wood so the paint wouldn't bleed.
Then I spray painted over the whole thing with black.
I used a utility knife to pull up the edge of each letter and pull it off. This is where my plan started going south! See how the paint bled underneath anyway? 😒
Some were worse than others.
I am not one to easily give up though so I decided to paint over the letters with white paint. It worked like a charm and I liked the look of the white letters on the black background better than the stained letters anyway!
It actually turned out that the black paint around the letters after the stickers were removed left little ridges and made a little outline of sorts and it was very easy to fill in the letters because the black ridges kept the white paint where it needed to be. So if your hands aren't too steady, you might try this accidental technique I just discovered! 😉

I like how these little repurposed IKEA mirrors were transformed into some super cute laundry room art and I feel much more satisfied that I made them instead of buying them!
Very cute uses of those Ikea mirrors! It's frustrating when projects don't go according to plan but you saved that one! I like the white better than the stain for the letters, too, so --- a happy accident!
ReplyDeleteYes, it is frustrating for sure and disappointing when you put a bunch of effort into something that doesn't work out... but that's life I guess!!

I like the "oops" one the Best!! That quote is hilarious! Thanks for keeping it real for us.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThe sentiment on the oops sign is too funny, Tania! I attempted letter sticker stenciling on a painted box last week. And like you, I got paint bleed. You'd never know you had an oops on that cute sign. Very cute clip art on the trio too. Happy 4th of July!
ReplyDeleteThanks Marie. You would think the sticker stenciling would work!!
DeleteI really like both projects but I honestly think the second one is definitely more your style lol!
ReplyDeletehaha! Thanks Pam!!
