I almost forgot to share how I made the key rack that we put in the front entry makeover we did at my boyfriend's house.
It's not a huge DIY project. In fact, it's just a small little detail but a much-needed one if you ask me. You need someplace to gather keys in an entry.
I shared a similar key rack that I found in the Front Entry Inspiration Board that I wanted to recreate.
DIY Key Rack
I just happened to have some thin pieces of wood that I thought would work.
I started by measuring and marking my pieces for cutting.
Once I had everything I needed cut out, I mocked it up to make sure it was going to work.
Then I sanded everything.
I predrilled where the nails would hold the pieces together and then used both wood glue and nails to assemble all the pieces.
Each section was clamped together for a while while I worked on another.
Once the glue had dried overnight, I used some small nails to make it extra sturdy.
Then I stained it with Minwax Espresso.
I also happen to have a container full of old keys that I've picked up here and there... estate sales, garage sales, the ground, etc. and I wanted to use them for the key hooks.
I used a hammer and my vice to carefully bend the keys. This step was the hardest one I think, I ended up breaking a couple of keys. I think if I had a torch and could have heated them up, it would have worked better. But I did get some bent for this project.
I used E-6000 industrial strength glue to glue the keys onto the board.
I'm happy with how it turned out!
I love how there is room for keys plus a couple of shelves. You can see he puts his wallet on the top and I've added a funny little potted faux cactus on the other shelf.
He just said the other day how it's so nice to have a place for his keys and wallet so he knows where they are all the time 😊
That's a very nice looking key rack! It's neat and organized. Not so big that too much can be stacked and hung on it. Just right!
ReplyDeletethank you!
DeleteBrilliant idea to recycle old keys for the hooks! The little prick cactus pot made me laugh out loud.
ReplyDeleteHaha!! Thanks Marie!
DeleteThat is a cute idea to use keys as the hooks. They do break easily!
ReplyDeleteThanks :)
