Since we took possession of our new fixer-upper house three weeks ago, we've been busy working our fingers to the bone!
Like literally... I've had bandaids on multiple fingers for a while now! 😂
But we are making such good progress and are getting so close to being ready to move in.
Progress at the Fixer-Upper!
I made a new video showing what we've done so far, I hope you'll enjoy it! If you missed the empty house tour be sure to check that out here: Our New Fixer-Upper Empty Home Tour.
The video goes into much more detail, has a LOT more pictures, (and even a little humor!) but here's the Reader's Digest version...
We have removed all the carpet that was downstairs and on the stairs.
Luckily it was pretty easy to get out and the padding was not glued down so it came right out too.
But boy was it gross! We discovered that the previous owners had at least one naughty cat that made several areas of the house its personal litter box 😖
And we discovered that they were not much on doing things right... there were three layers of contact paper inside the kitchen cupboards!
We took out the old, dated wood stove. Our plan is to put in a new electric fireplace.
I'll be painting the red tiles and the bricks and of course, the walls.
We did some demo and made a big ol' mess in the kitchen by ripping out an old bank of cupboards. They were too low to use for food prep. Our plan is to create a tiny breakfast nook or bar in this area.
You can also see that we took out the old linoleum... again with the layers 😩
We sanded and then resealed the original hardwood floors in the bedrooms.
Here is a before photo from one room...
And here is after!
I had to get a quick win so I used some spray paint and one of the old boob lights to create a new light.
A wicker boob!!! 😆😁
And we have painted walls, ceilings, and trim... and painted and painted... and painted some more! My right hand was swollen for a while!
I painted the doors that go out to the backyard black.
And of course, I've been shopping! 😍

Our plan is to DIY everything we can but there are a few things that we needed to purchase new... like this storage bed for our tiny master bedroom. It has drawers underneath!
I found this large basket at Fred Meyer for 50% off. As you can see from how I'm holding it up, I'll be using it to make a pendant light for our dining room.
All in all, we've made some great progress and we've been enjoying the process too 😊
I hope you enjoyed the video and this post, let me know what you think!
It makes me tired just watching!! Too bad it didn't go as fast as shown in the video! That would have been awesome! It's amazing how much progress you've made. It's sooo much better!
I hope you wore masks, from the other items you have worked on in the house, the chance of tile being asbestos is pretty high. It will be great when you get down to the bones, and know things are done right. Remodeling is never easy! LOOKS GREAT! Sandi
Wow, you two aren't wasting any time. I always love the tear-down/clean-out phase because there's nowhere to go but up. lol. It's looking so much better already. Love the bed, and I can't wait to see the transformation of the wood stove room.
This looks exciting. I'm jealous. Would you please show me how you turned baskets into light globes? I have several ceiling fixtures in my home with just bare bulbs, and no way to attach a standard globe. I love the basket idea.
Hi Chris, I have another blog post that shows exactly how to make the basket shade, I hope it helps with your situation :) https://www.littlevintagecottage.com/2021/10/diy-bleached-basket-pendant-light.html
Wow you guys have come a long way in such a short amount of time. Looking good!
ReplyDeleteThanks Marie, sometimes it doesn't feel like we've made any progress! haha! Some projects are just never ending... like painting!
DeleteThat is some seriously hard work! I'm looking forward to seeing things as you go along.
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be fun :) Thanks for following along Vikki!

ReplyDeleteHaha, wouldn't that be nice if it went that fast?! It feels so fresh and clean with the white walls and trim :o)
