Upcycled Rattan Tray - Thrift Shop Flip
07 September
Let's talk about trays... they are so handy to have, don't you think?
I used a sponge brush to paint around the leaf mask.
I did not have the color of green paint that I wanted for this project so I mixed my own. It would have been better if I didn't have to do that because I ended up having to mix several batches and getting the color exactly the same each time is hard.
I used a small artist's brush to get up close around the edges and to touch up any bleed-thru that happened around the leaves.
And here is the new, upcycled rattan tray! What do you think?
I think I'll list this in my handmade Etsy shop, LVC Handmade. I'd love it if you'd PIN!
They are nice for serving drinks and snacks if you have a fabric ottoman that you want to protect. They are nice for creating a table centerpiece that can be easily moved out of the way when needed. They can sometimes be hung on the wall as decor. They can be used in different rooms, like the bathroom to corral makeup, cotton swabs, and tissues; the office, porches, etc.!
Today I'm sharing a thrifted rattan tray that I picked up for $2 and gave a little makeover.
It was already pretty nice but some of the pieces on the sides had gone missing and it just seemed a little ho-hum boring to me.

Supplies I used:
The first thing I needed to do was fix the broken sides. I used some pieces of basket weaving cane and tacky glue for this. I had to redrill the holes to get the old broken reed out.
Once I had that done, I decided to paint the tray with a boho leaf design but I wanted the leaves to be the natural rattan color and the rest of the tray to be painted. So, I created a mask to do this.
I created my design in Word and then printed and cut out the leaves on regular computer paper.
Then I used spray adhesive to temporarily stick the mask down to the tray.
I liked it so far but it still seemed a little boring to me so I decided to add a little color with some colored raffia!
I could have totally stopped here but I decided to add feet! I used some wooden thread spools that I covered with the same raffia.
For the final touch, I made a little bead and raffia tassel.

Fun update of a rather plain and boring tray! The colored raffia and tassel are great finishing touches!
