I've been slowly decorating for fall and Halloween around my house. I'm just focusing on a few areas, my front porch, my fireplace mantel, and the dining room (very minimal in here).
I just finished my fireplace mantel and I'm especially proud of it!
I've wanted to do a non-traditional, all-white mantel for a couple of years now and I finally made it happen and it was almost completely thrifted and DIYed!
Thrifted and DIY Halloween Mantel

I've been collecting things from the thrift stores to create my vision for a few weeks now (aside from the moon... I have had the item I created him with for a couple years!)
A gathered a couple of traditional plastic pumpkin pails, a ceramic pumpkin planter, a styrofoam pumpkin, a small pumpkin votive candle holder, and a pizza pan.
I taped off the eyes, noses, and mouths (in hindsight, I only needed to do that on the small ceramic planter though because I ended up cutting those areas out on the larger pumpkins.)
Then I sprayed them all white.
As I said, I ended up cutting out the faces on the large pumpkin pails and since I did this after I had painted them, that meant I needed to do some paint touch-ups.
I also painted the insides black with regular craft paint (not pictured).
Here is what my fireplace mantel looked like before.
I cleared it completely to start with a blank slate.
Then I started adding in my DIYed and thrifted things... I added a white mirror that I had. See that makeover here:
Antique Mirror Refresh.
I used the thrifted pizza pan to make my own moon man that I've seen all over Pinterest!! I used the design that I got from Eryn at
Eryn Whalen Online.
Then, I layered my new moon man over the mirror. 🌚
Next, I added the two large pumpkin pails and this vintage blow mold ghost! I found him at a yard sale for just $1.00!!
Then the smaller pumpkins were added (the ghost has a larger pumpkin that he holds but it's orange and the peg that holds it in place is broken so I put the little votive holder in his hands.
I also added two
adorable ceramic ghosts. They are from
JoAnn's and they light up! 👻
Then, the smaller pumpkins...
And finally, to top it all off, I added some candles and the bats that I got at Dollar Tree a few years ago.
I added this cutie that I got a couple of years ago from
Decor Steals on the hearth.
And voila!!
Here are a few close-ups of my completed neutral thrifted and DIYed Halloween mantel!
I put a handful of regular white taper candles in the pumpkin pail. I like them just resting in there like that but I definitely wouldn't light them, they'd drip all over everything!
These candles are battery-operated and they even flicker! I thrifted them but you can get similar ones on Amazon too.
I love how it turned out, what do you think?
If you like it, I'd love it if you'd share by pinning!

DeleteI love it, especially the man in the moon! I don't think i could have done it without adding a little orange in someplace, but the neutral scene looks very striking!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I think it would look good in traditional colors too :)
