DIY Kitchen Makeover with Peel-and-Stick Counters, Backsplash Tiles, and Accent Wall!
17 November
Welp... I think I may have finally tamed the kitchen makeover beast!! 😂
It feels like it's been a looong project but in reality, I took quite a long break after we put in the new floors and removed all the cabinet doors.
I finally decided to get my butt in gear when the weather started to change and fall arrived because I needed to use my saw outside and I didn't want to do that in freezing cold weather!
So, while my home is never really done, this kitchen is pretty close... for now!
Today I'm sharing how I transformed the counters and backsplash and created a fun accent wall. All with peel-and-stick products!

And yes... I also made a video! Be sure to watch that because it goes into more detail with the how-to than this post does.
Let's have a look at the before pictures first. These are from the realtor's listing pictures.
It was just a lot of white, a poor paint job, yellowed plastic cabinet hardware, and a boring beige sheet vinyl floor. Oh... and boob lights... let's not forget the boob lights.
We ripped out the old flooring and the desk area under the large window right away. Then we installed new luxury vinyl tile flooring, new baseboards to replace the industrial vinyl molding, a new black sink and faucet, and removed the cabinet doors.
That's where I got a case of home improvement A.D.D. and stalled out for a few months while I worked on several other projects 😬
It has great reviews and I know of a couple of other bloggers who have used it and had great results (one has had it for 4+ years now!)
We'll see how it holds up. Obviously, it's not a permanent solution and now that we can see what butcher block counters would look like, that is probably what we'll get when we are ready!
The key is to caulk around the edges to prevent moisture from getting underneath and keep the edges from getting caught and peeling. I used black caulk around the sink and stovetop and white around the edges.
I used three rolls for our small kitchen.
They have lots of other designs... like granite if you like that!
Then, I used some peel-and-stick tiles to jazz up the basic white tiles that are here. This really helped because some of the tiles had broken and chipped so this hides all that!
I love these tiles, I also used the same tiles (different designs though) on our fireplace hearth and we are also using them in the hearth in the basement (post still to come).
And finally, I used some peel-and-stick wallpaper in a funky design to create an accent wall! This is Pip & Lo Black Ethereal Cosmos wallpaper and I am over the moon 😁happy with this wallpaper!!
Here is what the wall looked like before. The white painted splotches are from when we tried to cut into the wall to create built-in shelves between the studs. It didn't work out because there is bathroom plumbing directly behind this wall so we had to patch it back up.
I also replaced that hanging pendant light with a semi-flush mount that we got at Home Depot. It's the Home Decorator's Collection Evelyn light.
We thought we were going to have a small breakfast table in this corner so that's why we had a pendant there... it turns out we needed storage space more than we needed a breakfast nook, especially since the dining room is like 8 steps away!!
I updated the cabinet that is sitting on this wall for some more storage space. I chose to leave it the original color but I did update the finger pulls with gold and used the same wallpaper in the back of the cabinet.
I almost wanted to call this our peel-and-stick kitchen and totally would have if the floors had also been peel-and-stick but they are not 😉
I hope you enjoyed this kitchen makeover post! If you did, please consider sharing with a pin!
It looks awesome! I love the wallpaper and the counter top looks great! You never seem to be DONE, but it must feel good to be at a stopping point for a while!
