I decided to try a new style for my Christmas tree decor this year.
I usually do either a boho tree or a traditional vintage-themed tree... both are usually packed with every ornament I own!
This year I have a new flocked Christmas tree and with the snowy-white branches and more sparse look, I thought it lent itself well to a Scandinavian-themed tree.
Scandinavian-Themed Christmas Tree
So what makes it a Scandinavian tree?
Well, the Scandinavian style is clean and uncluttered, it uses natural materials and has plenty of negative space. It mixes old and new to combine traditional and modern. The main colors of the Scandinavian style are white, black, grey, and brown and it uses light to create an inviting, warm feel.
This style began in the 1930s when the nordic countries of Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, and Finland began using a simpler, more affordable way of living. It's a minimalist style that incorporates white space with materials and colors based on nature, yet it feels warm and welcoming. ~ Source: Living Spaces
I think I've captured all that on my tree, let me show you!
I pulled some things from my existing ornaments and I found a few new things to add this year too.
These unfinished wood ornaments are from the clearance section at Fred Meyer. I found them after Christmas last year and I think they ended up being .09 cents each!
These pinecone ornaments are something I already had. Even though they aren't real pinecones, I think they incorporate the nature aspect of the style.
I found a box full of handmade pottery ornaments at the thrift store last year too. They are beautiful and the whole box was only $2.99 and there are about 2 dozen ornaments including these black hearts and some birds.
I have always loved this little vintage ornament, it feels very Scandinavian to me.
I added some handmade ornaments too. I made some clay snowflake ornaments with these cookie cutters I found at Target. It was just $4.99 for the box and I thought I could use them for cookies too!
I left them the natural clay color and just added glitter.
I made the mandala heart ornaments last year. It was an experimental project that never made it to the blog. I used a black styrofoam meat tray 😲 to make them!
I love this little guy. We go to Park City, Utah every year and I found this cute little skiing rabbit. You can also see one of the pottery birds in this picture.
I have three little white Putz houses that I added. If you didn't know, Putz houses were originally intended to hang on the tree, they have a little hole in the back that a tree light fits into perfectly to light up the house. They originally had little red cellophane window films but those have all been broken out on these.
Here is another vintage ornament and some Dollar Store snowball ornaments that I had.
I found a bag of these little white Santa Claus ornaments at the thrift store just a couple of weeks ago. I think they were originally from the Dollar Store craft section (they had .99 cent tags on each one) so they were intended to paint but I like them as is!
This is a Target after-Christmas-sale snowflake that I got several years ago.
And I have a few vintage icicle ornaments that I added.
And my DIY Anthropologie-Inspired Christmas Tree Topper!
I think I accomplished the Scandinavian style pretty well here, what do you think?
I also made a little snowflake garland and hung it on my plate rack.
I hope you've enjoyed this post. If you have, I'd love it if you'd share it with a pin!
Your tree is beautiful! I like that you used the warm white lights instead of the cold bluish ones so common now. (brrrr!) I love Putz houses/churches and I used to collect them. Your clay ornaments look just like sugar cookies! Great job!
