I'm back with another fixer-upper house update! I have finally been able to tackle the areas of our house that were bugging me the most... the kitchen, the laundry room and adjacent bathroom, and now the entryway. You can see those other rooms here if you missed them or want to take another peek:

On to the entryway! Our house doesn't have one, lol. When you walk in the front door you are immediately in the living room. Most houses I've lived in have been like that.

That's one of my least favorite parts of this house and since we are using what was originally a coat closet as a pantry for our tiny kitchen, we really need a place to hang coats, jackets, and bags.

So, I started brainstorming how I could create an entryway where we'd have room for coat hooks and a bench to sit on plus key hooks, etc. Today I'm sharing what I've done to the wall.

I created a video of the makeover process.

Here is what it looked like when we bought the house, this is one of the pictures I took during our walkthrough. You can see the lockbox hanging on the front door. If you walk past the stairs you'll be in the kitchen and that coat closet on the left there is what is now our clantry (closet + pantry = clantry) 😁

These are the original hardwood floors and it does look like they tried to create the feeling of an official entryway by putting the boards a different direction.

Then, here comes Tania with all her A.D.D. chaotic makeover projects to make it 10 times worse! It looked like this picture below for months 😬 Just keepin' it real here!

I painted all the walls except this one because I knew all along I was going to do something fun here! I will be using that bench that is piled high with junk (I'll share that makeover in another post), the round Target mirror, the round jute rug, and that board lying there.

This wall has some old paneling that has been painted over multiple times. I wanted the top part to be smooth and not look like paneling so I filled the grooves with spackling.

Then I painted the whole thing black (Dark Secret by Behr). You'll see in a moment that I didn't need to paint the top, smooth portion because I changed plans mid-stream.

Next, I used the board that was lying there and another skinny trim piece that was leftover from another project to create a long skinny shelf.

The door opens right up onto this wall with no real space behind it so the shelf is only 2 1/2" deep. Actually, it's not good for much... you could set a cell phone or wallet there but it's mostly decorative although I did add some cute things to it you'll see.

I took down the weird shell-shaped light and replaced it with the KCO Gold Modern Wall Sconce that I found on Amazon.

This is where my original plan took a detour... I was going to do a stencil on the top part of the wall but then I found this Opalhouse peel & stick wallpaper at Goodwill! It was $16 which made me gasp a little... come ON Goodwill, wtf?!

But then I saw that it sells for $34 at Target. If you gotta have it, it's the Lollipop Floral Peel & Stick Wallpaper by Opalhouse.

I couldn't center the mirror because of the light and it's a little high but I think it still works. It reflects the light from the door to lighten up this corner a bit and since we are both tall we can still look into it.

I added these gold garment hooks under the shelf for our coats, jackets, and bags.

And then I added a little bit of decor to the shelf. I thrifted the picture, I just love these 90's prints! The Blah Blah Blah sign is from At Home but I don't see it on their website, it cracked me up because I say that a lot! And the little funnel-shaped vase is from the clearance section at Fred Meyer. It was just .77 cents! I added a couple of dried bunny tails and flowers.

I really love how it turned out! I think in the summer when we don't have jackets hanging from the hooks, I can add some dried flowers or a basket or something.

Next, I need to decide if I'm painting the front door or not, and if I do, what color? Then the bench makeover, and some sort of room divider to make this feel more like its own space.

I hope you enjoyed this post. If you did, I'd love it if you shared it!

    1. Thanks Vikki, the wallpaper did it for me too :)

  2. I love the wallpaper and it's pretty against the black. It looks like the wallpaper and door are about the same color. Maybe that's an illusion, but if they are, maybe they compliment each other and the door doesn't need paint?

    1. I think they are about the same color... really close anyway. I don't know, I'm still deciding but I'm leaning toward painting it ;) Surprise, surprise! haha!

  3. I think you did a wonderful job with this small, challenging spot. And I like the mirror off center, that is to predictable. I would paint the door after you make decisions about the bench and anything else you will do in that area. Good work!!

  5. Love the playful wallpaper and the color pairs well with the black wall. I know you'll probably end up painting the door 😉 Right now it's almost the same color as the wallpaper and they compete with one another. Painting it black would then compete with the lower part of the wall (or would it?) What if you painted it black but distressed it so you can see the stain color underneath to tie the two colors together? I don't know, but whatever you decide to do, I'm looking forward to seeing it!
