It's time for Christmas in May in our Twelve Months of Christmas series! I can't believe we'll be halfway through the year next month!
If you are new to this series, let me give you the rundown. I decided to create this series because I never have enough time to complete all the Christmas ornaments I want every year so I figured why not continue making them all year long?!
Some of them are recreations of vintage ornaments and some are ornaments I've designed that are inspired by vintage ornaments. I share them here with you so that you can make them with me! 😃
Below is this month's ornament tutorial in a blog post and a YouTube video!
Christmas in May - Retro Drum Ornaments
If you'd like to catch up, you can see January through April's ornaments here:
Empty toilet paper tube (1 tube will make 2 ornaments)
Q-tip (1 per ornament)
A scrap of cardboard (like a pizza box)
Felt - white and the color of your choice (I used red and green)
Ribbon trim - skinny 1/8" wide and medium 1/4" wide (gold and silver work best but any color that coordinates with your felt will work - I'm using gold rick-rack in two widths)
Scissors - a pair for fabric and a pair for paper
Glue - white craft glue and hot glue
Here is the video tutorial:
And here are the written instructions:
Step One - Cut the drum shapes
Cut the toilet paper tube to create the drum shape. I cut mine to 1 3/4". You can get two drums from one toilet paper tube.
Step Two - Cut and add the drum bottom and top
Use the tube and trace two circles onto a scrap of cardboard. Cut them out, these are the top and bottom of the drum.
Glue them to each end of the tube with white craft glue.
Step Three - cut and add the colored felt
Cut a strip of felt to wrap around the center of the drum. Cut it a little wider than needed to ensure you get all the cardboard covered nicely. We'll trim later.
Add glue to the outside of the tube and roll it up in the felt.
Step Four - cut and add the felt circles
Cut two circles from the white felt, and make them slightly larger than the cardboard circles.
Glue them to the top and bottom of the drum.
Now you can trim it all up.
Step Five - Add the ribbon trims
Start at the top of the back where the ends of the felt meet and add a dab of hot glue and place the end of the trim.
Add another dab of glue on the bottom and glue the trim on the diagonal. fold it over and go back up to the top. Repeat until you reach the back where you started.
Add a hanger on the back with a loop of the small trim and then add the large trim around the top and bottom of the drum covering the hanger.
Step Six - Create the drumsticks
Break the Q-tip in half to create the drumsticks.
Glue them diagonally on the top of the drum. Make sure the end of the Q-tip faces away from the hanger so they will look good when they are hanging on your tree.
Step Seven - Sign and Share!
Don't forget to sign your ornaments. I cut little squares of paper for the bottom and signed them that way.
I love TP roll crafts and these little drummer boy ornaments are stink'n adorable! I think I'll start saving the TP rolls again and make a set of these with my grandson for their Christmas tree this holiday season. Thanks for the idea!
