I'm trying to use some of the things I've picked up while I'm out thrifting in an attempt to keep the hoard monster away so today I'm doing a project with all things I already have.
And it's perfect timing because it's also time for the Do-It-Over-Designers (DOD) challenge!
The DODs are a group of blogging designer friends and we get together virtually to take something old or unused and "do it over" into something new. These items can be found in closets, garages, barns, yard sales, thrift stores, you name it. This time we are all making over something made of wood!
I will share my project below and then at the end of this post, I'll share links so you can check out the other ladies projects.
Repurposed Wood Ring Tray
These are the supplies that I gathered from my stash.
Supplies needed:- Wood picture frame with solid wood back (or wood to cut a back)
- Wood Drapery rings
- Paint in the color of your choice
- Wood glue
- Wood filler
I've been picking up packages of wooden drapery rings whenever I see them because I've seen so many cute projects made with them and I've had the picture frame for a while. I like that this one has a sturdy solid back. Frames like these make great trays which is what I'm making with this one!
You can see that these things together cost just over $7 and I didn't even use all the rings.
I decided to give the frame a couple of coats of paint before I added the wood rings so that there wouldn't be a whole bunch of hard-to-reach areas to paint after the rings are added. I had a little sample pot of paint that had not been tinted, it was just white.
I also decided to turn the frame upside down because the backing fits perfectly inside the groove on the other side of the frame. The tray will then sit flat once it's finished.
I gathered up the number of rings I wanted to use and removed the eye hooks that were in them.
I used Gorilla Wood Glue to add them to the frame.
I decided to only add the rings on the ends of the frame because the Martha Stewart rings were a little larger than the others and I didn't have enough of the others to go all the way around the frame.
Keep reading though because I made something with the Martha Stewart rings too 😊
I let that dry overnight and then I used some wood filler to fill the holes in the corners of the frame.
Once that was dry I gave it a quick sanding and then sprayed the whole thing with white (I do not have the patience to paint all those rings with a paintbrush 😖
Next, I turned my attention to the frame backing that will be the bottom of the tray. I used some Opalhouse peel-and-stick wallpaper that was leftover from my
Small Entryway Makeover.
Remember I flipped the frame upside down to create this tray? Well, it's because it had a groove all around the frame that was the perfect depth for the back piece to fit flush.
I used E6000 glue this time to glue the frame backing on.
Well now... isn't that the cutest little boho tray you've ever seen?! 😄
Now, remember the Martha Stewart rings that were slightly larger than the others?
Can you guess what I made with them?
A little vase for dried flowers!
I painted the rings pink and yellow to coordinate with the wallpaper.
I added a candle and this is now on the coffee table downstairs 😊
Now it's time to check out the other ladies projects!
That is just darling and so creative. I've never thought about crafting with drapery rings, of course now I will be picking them up whenever I see them, too!! Thanks for the inspiration.
