Oh boy, I'm so excited about this post today. You see, I've been keeping a little secret and it's finally time to share!
About nine years ago, I helped my parents fix up one of their rental houses that had been trashed by a renter. It's all documented in a few blog posts and I'll share links to those at the end of this post.
Well, my parents are now ready to get out of the rental business. They have three total and they plan to keep just one for now. We've been working on fixing one to put on the market for sale, and they have sold the one I helped them with 9 years ago to me! 🙌😄
And the most exciting part? My daughter is going to rent from me and she and I are working together to fix it up and make it her little dream house (and mine too... we share a lot of the same tastes)!
Of course, I'll be sharing and documenting all of this here on the blog and on my YouTube channel! In fact, today I am sharing the first walkthrough tour after the current renter moved out!
New Rental House Tour
I love this little house. It sits right next door to the house I grew up in (the rental that my parents are keeping) and on a corner lot with a huge vacant lot beside it.
It was built in 1950 and is just barely over 1,000 square feet with one bedroom, one bathroom, and a loft space.
Check out the video tour below and then read on for additional pictures and information.
This is the front of the house. We affectionately call it the A-frame even though it's not. The large A-shaped window is what started that.
This is the living room, the front door is on the left. Be sure to watch the video because it's much easier to get a sense of how the house is laid out when you are looking at these pictures after watching that.
This is the view from the dining room. The curtains were left by the renter and we'll be changing those out for some DIY curtains.
It has lofted ceilings and rustic beams making it seem much bigger than it really is.
Here is the view from up in the loft. This makes it look small but that living room is actually 25 feet wide by about 12 feet. It's going to be a little awkward to figure out furniture and TV placement.
The carpet was also installed new nine years ago and seems to be in good shape so we'll just shampoo it.
The dining room and kitchen are open to the living room.
We are planning to DIY a kitchen island.
The cabinets were installed new nine years ago along with the beadboard walls and open shelving.
It has a new fridge and a skinny little pantry next to it.
Here is the view from the back door back into the living room.
We will be going this weekend to pick out new floors for the kitchen, dining room, laundry, and bath. This is very old sheet vinyl and it has lots of holes and condition issues.
Right off the dining room, there is a small laundry nook. I have already ordered a stacking washer/dryer to make the best use of space. We will take down the shelf and reuse the wood to make a little folding table next to the stacking units.
And the bathroom.
Directly across from the laundry nook is the only true bedroom in the house. My daughter is planning to use this as her dressing room/closet.
And this is the view back toward the laundry nook.
Back in the living room are the stairs up to the loft area.
There are ledges on both sides of the living room. We would like to put some plants up here and find an old library ladder so she can get up there to water them.
And this is the loft area. Sydney does tufting and some painting so this will be her craft space.
This little room upstairs at one point was used as a large walk-in closet. It will now be used as her cozy cute bedroom! This is the first room we are making over.
Here is my lovely daughter, Sydney, posing in the living room.
Our goal is to DIY and thrift about 90 percent of what we put in here with the exception of the washer/dryer and new flooring.
Here is the back of the house. There is a small garage.
This view is from the neighbor's yard. The house also includes that little shed. My dad is going to continue mowing the big side yard for now and this is where the lawn mowers are stored.
We are going to have a ball fixing this up, especially since it's mostly cosmetic! It doesn't need any major work done to it 😊

Congratulations Tania, what a cute little house! I can totally see an injection of your signature boho vibe in this space and I’m looking forward to seeing the transformation.
That is such a sweet little house Tania! The openness gives it a spacious feel. I'm looking forward to seeing what you and your daughter do with it. It's already super cute.

ReplyDeleteYes, I'm so glad that it isn't in the state as the other house I'm helping my parents with. Or the state it WAS in 9 years ago!
