Small Loft Bedroom Updates

02 September

My daughter and I have been busy working on our new project together.

If you're new or missed the news, you can read about our new adventure and see all the before pictures here: New Rental House Tour.

When I asked her which room she wanted to work on first, she chose the bedroom. So, that's the first room we are tackling.

Read on to see what we've done so far.

Here is a fun video of our progress:

Let's start with a few before pictures of this room.

It's a small room upstairs with an open loft area overlooking the living room right in front of it. It was intended to be a large walk-in closet but my daughter has decided to make it into her cozy bedroom space.

We started by removing the door because it was just banging into the sloped ceiling making a big hole and painting the room.

Here it is after painting.

And I know this next picture will have little impact since there's no before picture but this is the window casing and windowsill. It was absolutely caked with mold and bug carcasses 😞

We cleaned it all up and painted the windowsill the same color as the walls. In fact, we painted all the molding and door trim the same color as the walls.

We are planning to thrift and DIY as much of this house as we can.

Usually, a bed isn't something I'd recommend thrifting but I just happened to have a spare queen-sized bed so for my daughter this qualifies as thrifted 😂

We transformed it with a fun DIY boucle treatment. I'll share that tutorial soon.

The linen curtains are from 3HLinen Inc. These are 100% blackout, tie-top linen curtains in the color "natural."

I can't say enough good things about these curtains. First of all, there's nothing quite like linen. It's so luxurious and rich feeling.

Their curtains are 100% European flax and handmade in Europe. They are nice, thick curtains with a vinyl blackout liner and although these are not the heat-blocking curtains that they offer, they are doing a remarkable job at keeping the room cooler!

The back of the house (and this bedroom window) faces south and gets really hot in the afternoon sun.

I did buy the roller shade and the curtain rod new.

The pillows and duvet on the bed are all second-hand.

I have a rule for throw pillows, I do not buy them unless the covers can be removed and washed for two reasons.

1) Pillows get dirty and I want to be able to wash the covers.
2) I only want a few down-filled pillow inserts and I like to be able to switch out the covers for the different holidays and seasons.

The two UGG pillows and the floral pillow all have zippers. the little heart-shaped pillow is small enough that you can just throw it in the wash.

I did also buy a new AC unit to replace the old one that was in the wall. It wasn't working well at all.

My daughter brought over some things she's been thrifting to start decorating although there's lots more to do in here still!

We added a vintage curtain tie-back that she found at a yard sale.
