DIY Snowman Hat Tree Topper
I know most people use a star or an angel as their Christmas tree topper and I do too most of the time but I have a really cute alternative to those traditional choices and it's easy to make!
Read on to see how easy it is to make your own...

I made one of these years ago but either I didn't share it on the blog back then, or it was one of the posts that I lost several years ago so I decided to recreate it.
- Empty oatmeal container like THIS one
- A scrap of cardboard (for the hat brim)
- Black spray paint or craft paint
- Wide ribbon for the hat band
- Various trims and embellishments
- Glitter
- White craft glue
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Step One - Cut and assemble the hat
Cut the open end of the oatmeal container off leaving about 6" of the container. I used a utility knife and then evened it up with scissors.
You will also cut a smaller circle out of the center of the large circle. Make it about 2 inches less than the diameter of the oatmeal container. I used a canning jar to trace the circle.
This is so you can put it on top of your tree. I forgot to take a picture of this step but here is the bottom of the finished hat so you can see what I mean.
Glue the oatmeal container to the lid with white craft glue and allow time to dry.
Step Two - Paint the hat
Paint the entire hat black with spray paint or craft paint. Don't forget the bottom!
Step Three - Decorate the hat
Use some wide ribbon to add a hat band to the snowman hat. I had some self-adhesive burlap ribbon but you can use hot glue for regular ribbon.
Make sure you have the seam where the ribbon ends meet in the back of the container if your oatmeal container has a seam on it.
I also had some self-adhesive red snowflake ribbon that I used on top. If you have Christmas ribbon you probably don't need anything additional on yours.
Step Four - Glitter the hat
Spread some white craft glue on the hat here and there wherever it looks like snow might gather and sprinkle it with glitter. I used a thick line of glue along the edge seam to hide it.
Use, big chunky glitter to make it look more like snow.
I glittered the whole top to disguise that it's actually an oatmeal container 😂
You can also see that I added some vintage glass Christmas picks next to the candies.
This is such a cute alternative! Great idea!
