Repurposed Wooden Napkin Holder

If you're on any social media platform or read many blogs, you have probably heard the terms cottagecore, grandmacore, granny chic, or grand millennial among others. These are used to describe some fairly new and trending styles of decorating.

If you look them up online, they may remind you of things that were popular in the eighties and nineties. They often include things that older people (40s and up) remember having in their homes but to younger people (late 30s and younger) it's brand new.

Some examples of things you'll see with these styles are:

  • goose/geese decor (crocks, lamps, kitchen towels, and decor)
  • lots of ruffles and frills (couches with ruffled skirts, over-the-top curtains, and drapes, handmade wooden "anything" with heart cutouts)
  • floral prints (on dishes, fabric, and wallpaper)

Some people don't like it. I've heard sentiments like "No way, I lived through that era and don't want to go back," "No, it reminds me of my mom's/grandma's house," etc.

Some people do like it. I've heard sentiments like "Yay, I remember those things and I always loved them," "Yes, it reminds me of my mom's/grandma's house," etc.😄

Personally, I kind of like it; It's growing on me!

So this thrift-shop-flip is what I consider cottagecore, grandmacore, granny chic, or grand millennial.

I thrifted this wooden napkin holder for $1.49 intending to just paint it, but when I pulled it out of the to-do pile, my mind saw something else.

What I envisioned meant that I needed to take it apart which was a good thing because it really wasn't very sturdy anymore.

I used some wood filler to fill all the old staple holes.

One side split when I was taking it apart so I had to glue and clamp it.

Once the wood filler and glue dried, I sanded it all down.

I painted it with Vintage Pink from DecoArt's Boho Vibes Paint Set.

Then I used two 2" L-brackets.

Attaching one to the back of each side of the napkin holder.

A little distressing...

And now this vintage napkin holder is a set of cute bookends!

It's a really simple makeover and I think it turned out so cute!

  1. I love these heart bookends Tania. That pink is so pretty! I had both hearts and geese in my decor back in the 90s and I loved them then. I still love hearts and wouldn't hesitate to put them anywhere. Geese? Not so much. lol.

    1. Haha! I feel like a lot of people are going to be like hearts, yes; geese, no. I think in the right setting and just one or two geese can be cute.

That is a nice improvement! I like the new trend--it's probably in reaction to all the sterile/institution style we've just gone through. I like to walk into someone's house and see their personality--not a school cafeteria kitchen.

  3. The napkin holder transformed into bookends beautifully! That's a pretty pink. I'm afraid i'm still not recovered from the hearts and geese era, tho! LOL!
