Upcycled Vintage Side Table

01 July

I've been thinking of trying to flip some thrifted furniture and sell it on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist but I'm torn.

I enjoy making over small furniture pieces and flipping them for a little bit of a profit but I hate dealing with people on FB Marketplace. The number of times you have to answer the question "Is this still available," only to be ghosted after that is so annoying, all the scammers wanting to have their brother, friend, co-worker, etc. pick up the item while they pay you now without even seeing the piece, yah right. Not to mention trying to set up a time and decide if you want a bunch of strangers coming to your house or if you want to load up whatever you're selling and meet them someplace... only to be ghosted then too sometimes.

I just don't know if it's worth it.

But I did pick up a cute little vintage side table from a seller on FB Marketplace for $10, and I gave it a makeover. However, now I've decided to keep it... so much for flipping 😂

But let me show you how I transformed it.

I did make a video for this makeover. You can see it here:

Here are the listing pictures.

As you can see it was in rough shape. It had lots of gouges and stains on the top, it was missing the door inserts, and the base and doors were plastic.

I think most people would have probably passed it up because of this.

After removing the base and the door, I sanded the whole thing. I concentrated mostly on the top, but I also sanded the sides, the base, and the door.

I painted the sides, base, and door with Dark Secret by Behr. It's just leftover interior wall paint from our house.

Remember, the base and door are plastic. I scuffed them up with sandpaper a little bit too and the paint stuck really well.

I thought about using some different, more modern legs but at this point, I was still planning on reselling it so I chose the less expensive option and put the original base back on it.

I found some cane at the thrift store recently and decided to add this to the door inserts which is what I think it originally had.

If you are using a mesh cane, you must soak it first until it's pliable so it won't break while working with it.

I cut the insert pieces first and then soaked them in the kitchen sink in warm water for about 20 minutes.

I placed the pieces inside each door panel and used a staple gun to attach them.

Here it is with the door reinstalled. It was at this point that I decided I was probably going to keep it 😍

I added a coat of clear poly to protect it.

I found some pretty door pulls at World Market.

I love the look of the natural wood top and the natural cane against the black.
