A Bold Front Stoop Makeover
Recently I showed you the dining bench we made for my daughter's dining room from a curbside dresser but that's not all we've been working on at her house.
We also completed a bold makeover of her front door.
I was planning to do this front makeover next spring when it was a little warmer but we decided to tackle it sooner for a couple of reasons.
My daughter is part of an influencer program where she gets free products in exchange for online reviews. Usually, she receives things like makeup, lotion, shampoo, etc. but recently she's moved up in the program and has received bigger things to review. So far she's gotten a new kitchen faucet, ceiling fan, and a porch light.
She only has about 30 days to submit her review when she receives something so we had to change out the porch light sooner rather than later and you can't just have a pretty new porch light with a janky-looking front door 😂
Here is our inspiration for her front door area. She loved the giant house numbers and the pink door.
I'm calling ours a front stoop. Typically a stoop doesn't have a roof over it but a true porch has room for chairs. Our house has a roof over the door, but the steps are barely big enough to turn around, so in my opinion, it qualifies as a stoop!
Here is what it looked like before: the door was dark red or maroon, and neither I nor my daughter liked it. Over the summer we created the brick flower beds on either side of the door. The neighbors across the street are remodeling and have a giant pile of these bricks in the yard. We asked if we could have some and they were more than willing to part with them!
I'm sure the large house numbers in the inspiration photo are metal, but we used wooden ones and painted them to achieve the same look. We used these 17" large wooden numbers.
I'm not too worried about them being outside. They are under the roof and we gave them a couple of coats of polyurethane to help protect them.
Here is what it looks like when it starts to get dark.
Everything was looking so cute but those front steps were just not doing it for us so we decided to stencil them.
The stenciling project happened over two weekends because first I scrubbed the concrete steps with soap and water and since it's getting cold outside, it didn't dry in time to do them on the same day.
So, the next weekend, we used a portion of a large stencil that I already had and black porch & floor paint.
My daughter is beyond pleased with her new front stoop 😊
Next summer it should look really pretty with plants and flowers in the flower beds.
I love how this turned out, twice as nice as the inspiration piece. The upgraded porch light is the perfect complement to the new paint color and stenciled steps. Wow :)
ReplyDeleteAww, thank you so much! I love the light too.

ReplyDeleteThank you Gina! It's an improvement for sure!
DeleteIt’s so pretty! I love it! I love the pink. Hugs,
ReplyDeleteThank you! It looked a little more bubble gum than we were expecting but I like it.
DeleteSO many great ideas for your viewers to try! Thank you!!! Now I want to stencil my front porch....!!! Happy Holidays!
ReplyDeleteThank you, I'm so glad you are ispired!
DeleteI was skeptical about a pink door but it turned out beautifully! I was having visions of hot pink and I'm not a fan. It's very pretty and i love the huge numbers! Stenciling the step was the perfect finishing touch! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I think it turned out nice too but the numbers are my favorite part.
DeleteVery charming and welcoming.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much :)
DeleteThe two of you have been making quite a difference in this little house.Sometimes it only takes a bit of elbow grease and time to give a fresh look to our surroundings. An older house near my home is getting a makeover and she's starting to be able to hold her head up once again.
ReplyDeleteThat's how I view things. When I see an old, broken down house (or anything for that matter), I see what it could be with just a little elbow grease!
